Points are non-tradable units that campaigns and platforms use to track participant contribution before rewards are distributed. Points typically convert to rewards at a defined moment (see Snapshot), with each point’s value determined by the size of the reward pool and the total points earned. Points-based programs became one of the dominant campaign accounting models in Web3 because they let platforms measure continuously and pay once.
That separation is the whole appeal. Measurement can run for weeks across many different actions, while settlement happens in a single event with a single set of numbers to verify.
It also means a point has no fixed worth while a campaign is live. Because value is the pool divided by total points earned, every additional participant dilutes what each point returns. A large balance in a crowded campaign can settle lower than a small balance in a quiet one.
